✡️ The Weekly Sip: A full-bodied kosher wine blends tradition and community with Passover celebration

Throughout history, wine has been globally used for both tradition and ritual. Be it to mourn or to celebrate, wine is a symbol of freedom and camaraderie for many cultures. At the end of this week, the Jewish holiday of Passover will begin, and of course, wine plays a role in the festivities

One of the things I love most about wine is that its enjoyment is rooted in community. I genuinely believe that there is something in every category for every consumer, and finding great Kosher wines for Passover is no exception. Given that Passover is one of the most sacred and widely observed holidays in the Jewish faith, it's only fitting that wine plays a significant role at the table. For those who may not be familiar, Passover is a weeklong festival that honors the story of the Israelites' exodus from ancient Egypt. A key part of this celebration is the traditional Passover meal, known as a seder, which includes several important rituals. Friends and family gather for a feast and wine is consumed by many. Wine, once regarded as a noble beverage, symbolizes freedom when enjoyed during a Passover seder. The connection between wine and Passover is a beautiful example of how this cherished beverage brings people together in meaningful ways, blending tradition, community, and celebration.

A full-bodied Kosher Wine, 2022 Peraj Petita from Celler de Capcanes.

This week’s featured Sip is the 2022 Peraj Petita from Celler de Capcanes. A blend of Grenache, Tempranillo, Merlot, and Syrah, this wine pairs beautifully with the red meat and salty-flavored foods typically present for Passover. This full-bodied Kosher wine showcases notes of dark red berries and cherries with rustic, earthy qualities and a creamy finish.

Located in the Catalonia region of northern Spain, Celler de Capcanes was not always a producer of Kosher wine. That changed in 1995 when the Jewish community in Barcelona requested a Kosher wine for their needs. The winery installed separate equipment and trained its winemakers in the customs and strict requirements of Kosher wine production. Since then, they have been producing small quantities of Kosher wines certified for Passover, meeting the community’s needs while maintaining high quality.
