BJ’s Wholesale Club to Bring New Energy to Towson Place

Towson is set to gain a major economic boost as BJ’s Wholesale Club prepares to open a new location at Towson Place, filling the large retail space left vacant after Walmart’s 2024 closure. The national retailer plans to occupy nearly 155,000 square feet, marking one of the most significant additions to Towson’s retail landscape in recent years.

The new store is expected to anchor an already vibrant shopping center that includes Target, Marshalls, Burlington, PetSmart, and Panera Bread. While a formal opening timeline has not yet been announced, Baltimore County Councilman Mike Ertel confirmed that substantial renovations are planned. The former two-story Walmart will be transformed into a single-story BJ’s, accompanied by updates to the surrounding parking lot.

Residents and local leaders say the project signals strong confidence in Towson’s continued growth. Ertel called the redevelopment “another reinvention” for a center that has long adapted to the community’s evolving needs. Surrounded by dense neighborhoods, schools, and the bustling Towson Town Center, Towson Place remains a highly desirable location for major national brands.

BJ’s arrival follows another major addition: Dick’s Sporting Goods, which is currently converting the former Bed Bath & Beyond space. Real estate experts see these back-to-back leases as evidence of a renewed demand for brick-and-mortar retail, especially in high-density, well-established markets like Towson.

With BJ’s joining the roster of retailers, Towson Place is poised for a new chapter—one that promises increased foot traffic, improved amenities, and more shopping options for Towson residents. As redevelopment progresses, the center is once again proving its resilience and importance to the community’s economic vitality.
