Hello Towson and Welcome to the Weekly Sip!

We’re staying stateside this week and exploring one of the most diverse regions in the wine world. Welcome to Sonoma!

Sonoma County, California is one of the most geographically diverse regions of the world. It’s also home to more than 425 wineries spread out across 19 different American Viticultural Areas, or AVAs, including the Sonoma Coast, Alexander Valley, and the Russian River Valley, as well as several others. Encompassing a total area of 1,576 square miles and more than 1 million acres, you can probably imagine that the Sonoma County wine region has a very diverse terroir overall. Remember that word from last week? To recap, terroir is the word used to describe the geological and geographical characteristics of a wine growing region including but not limited to its elevation, temperatures, proximity to water, weather and climate patterns, and presence of other plants and animals in the area that influence the availability of resources. The immensity of this area allows the full spectrum of individualism between wines, viticultural approaches, and winemaking philosophies to really be recognized. This region has also experienced a dramatic geological history including earthquakes, floods, and wildfires, resulting in varied elevations, 31 different distinct soil types, and a wide range of climates and average temperatures in different specific areas. It truly is one of the most diverse and unique winemaking regions in the world.

Head High Wines is a great example of both the purity and diversity of Sonoma. The folks at Head High are proud of their home region and are very intentional in their processes because of this. Their goal of producing bold, unique wines while maintaining a philosophy of purposefully minimal intervention is designed to allow the character of Sonoma to fully shine, and they do it well. Head High’s 2022 Pinot Noir is bright and rich with notes of cherry, hints of clove and cinnamon, and just a touch of leafy earthiness on the finish. It makes a great addition to the grilled meats and veggies of a traditional spring cookout and it’s the perfect pairing to pizza night.

As always, if you need help finding this wine, need recommendations, or have questions or comments, you can reach me at [email protected] or swing by the Spirit Shop Falls Road and see me! Also, Sonoma County Terroir - Sonoma County Winegrowers was used as a source for this week’s feature and they have a ton of great information for those of you who would like to learn more about the region and all it has to offer.

Happy sipping!
